Ramble On -- June 8

 Every since I read Keith Richards' book, I have been slightly obsessed with The Stones. I heard this song on my way to work, and it has been stuck in my head all day. Take a listen for your dose of one of the classics.

 I also heard this song on my way to work (it was a surprisingly good morning for radio in the G6 this morning). I turned it up real loud, rolled my windows down, and confused all those in hearing range-"why is that young girl listening to that song??" Well, the answer is simple: it's 'cause it's awesome. Don't even try and argue with me. If you've heard it, then you know it is a catchy song that you can't help but like. You may be too embarrassed to admit it, but you love the REO Speedwagon, too!  

ghosts of days gone by-- alter bridge

I have always had major respect for Alter Bridge, ever since Myles Kennedy grabbed the mic and belted out that song in the movie "Rock Star". (Ok, that's actually untrue. I really was a fan of AB long before I even knew that was Myles in the movie, but the other statement sounds much more intense, so I'm gonna go with it.) "Ghosts of Days Gone By" is the latest single off ABIII, and is quite honestly one of Alter Bridge's best songs they have ever put out. It combines all the elements that make the band such a staple of modern rock. The mind-blowing vocal talents of Kennedy are showcased, the amazing and under-rated guitaring (yes, i did in fact make that word up) of Mark Tremonti, and the deep and meaningful lyrics that are to be expected from the band. It's a really great song, and in addition to "Isolation", it has convinced me to go out and buy ABIII.

On Sunday night Tantric will be playing a show super-close to my hometown, and after they thoroughly impressed me at their show in Lexington a few months back (i blogged about it. if you haven't read it, seriously do. short summary: first tour bus experience, great band, great show. it's an entertaining read to say the least.) Anyway, this is just one song from the really solid Tantric that is also a great buy.

Ramble On - February 3

Hesitate--Stone Sour - I first heard this song live at the Stone Sour show in Lex last week, and I really liked it but thought how strangely slow and mellow it was for Corey Taylor, even for his role with Stone Sour. At the show I thought it was a sappy love song (because his vocals weren't turned up loud enough- good going sound man). Then I heard it on the radio the other night and looked up the words, and found out that it's more along the lines of a breakup song at the end of a sappy relationship.   

I absolutely love Taylor's voice, and he could probably sing the phone book and I'd still love it. This super-slow, super-emotionally charged song is now one of my current favorites, and almost makes me want to break up with my bf just so I can have this as my theme song for life. I kid, I kid...but seriously, I love it that much that I might consider it ;) 

Isolation--Alter Bridge - I love Alter Bridge, and always have. I really like their new album, and this song is one of my favorites from "III." I also adore this video ("Faithfully" deja vu, anyone?) and not just because of how beautiful I think Mark Tremonti is. (He held a door open for me one night in Nashville after a Sevendust show. We had a connection, and may still be in love.) 

"Isolation" is nothing extraordinarily different, just a really good modern rock song, with some great guitar licks (thanks, my love Mr. Tremonti, for them) and that angelic voice of Myles Kennedy, who, I admit, I like to pretend really got his start in music by singing for Steel Dragon at the end of the movie "Rock Star."  I'm gonna throw in a little "Stand Up and Shout" by Steel Dragon now, just because I'm thinking about it now and considering leaving work just to go watch it. It is an awesome movie, seriously.

Down by the Water--The Decemberists  - I must admit that I did not think that I would like The Decemberists. I am picky, and yes, I'll say it, a bit stubborn, when it comes to music. I think I'll blame this one also on the conditioning of my local radio stations. If its not Shinedown or Van Halen, I probably don't hear it, and I just assume that I don't like it (disclaimer: I do not actually care much for Van Halen. Or ACDC, while we're being honest. There went my credibility. Oh well. I can write my own songs about an ice cream truck, so David, just keep yours and I'll "jump" to my own.)

Now that I'm off that soap box, back to The Decemberists. They are very folky, very happy indie people who I picture holding hands and skipping through a field of daisies. Of course, of all the songs from their new album, "The King is Dead," my favorite track is "Down by the Water," the least daisy-skipping song on the whole thing. But still, it's really good. It makes me think of REM at times, and the beginning makes me think of another song that I can't think of right now but is killing me trying to figure it out.

Liking The Decemberist is my attempt at being a "cool kid" listening to cool kid music. Maybe I'll go put on my most indie clothes and find a field of some daisies to skip through. It's what all the cool kids are doing. After you listen to them, you might just wanna hold my hand and join me.     

And, just to throw out my opinion, because I know you want to know, I HATE how VEVO is infiltrating YouTube and forcing you to watch so many advertisements before you can watch an "official video." I'm not so dense that I don't understand its purpose ($$$$$$$$$) but it still really sucks. So there. 

"it's time to ramble on"

after a dear friend told me that she actually checks out the music that i post links to on facebook, i decided to take my sharing of music to the next level (and really it was such an obvious level that i can't believe i didn't think of it sooner). honestly, what better place for me to share music than my music blog? so, starting today, i will feature 3-5 of my "songs of the day" along with a bit of my insights and opinions. the songs will come from what i've been struck by on the radio that morning, from what pandora thinks i should be struck by while at work, and whatever else is currently playing in my head. 

so, without further ado, here are today's songs of the day. i hope you enjoy <3 

 

Ramble On- Led Zeppelin -- Since this song is the originator of the title of this feature, what better way to start out my list than this. Such a great song. And, just by listening to Zeppelin, your cool rating jumps up 10 points.   

                                                                                                                                  Buckcherry- Lit Up -- The first Buckcherry song that I can remember listening to, this one holds a special little place in my heart.  Even though I don't "love the cocain," I do still love this song. Listen to it and try not to smile and wanna dance around- I dare you. 

Animal- Def Leppard -- This video (and now song after watching the video) is guaranteed to make you want to grow out your mullet or join the circus (or heck, maybe both). I'm not sure why I am so fond of Def Leppard. Maybe it's because every rock radio station that I have access to is stuck in the 80's and has conditioned me to like them (You know you have memorized all the words to "Pour Some Sugar On Me," don't even try to lie.) Or maybe it's just good music. We may never know.

                                                                                                                    December- Collective Soul -- I might as well throw in a song from the 90's if I'm covering every other decade, and what better song than this one? "Don't think about it," just listen to it and love it. (Btw, sorry about the video, but I couldn't get the official one to post.)  

Isolation- Alter Bridge -- Myles Kennedy is a bad, bad man, and combine him with Mark Tremonti and the rest of Alter Bridge, you can't get anything less than amazing. "Isolation" is the first single released off of ABIII, and if it is any indication of the rest of the album, it's a must have.
